OEM Mopar Belts And Hoses

What do belts do in a car? They move auto parts mechanically. More specifically, they run the crankshaft and move most parts that start, steer, heat, and cool. Serpentine and drive belts are prime examples. They move parts in systems from the alternator to the power steering. Timing belts (or timing chains) are another important example. They help turn the engine's camshaft, which helps keep valves and pistons pumping in sync. Even the climate control system and its fans have belts, which work with the serpentine belt to move their parts.

What hoses do in a car, then, is just as straightforward. They move auto parts using hydraulic (liquid) pressure. Radiator hoses, for one, carry coolant between the engine and the radiator. Heater core hoses, on the other hand, push hot coolant through the HVAC system, warming the cabin. In older models, fuel hoses connect the gas tank and engine, while brake hoses move brake fluid to activate the brake calipers. Vehicles even have air intake hoses to help oxygenate the engine and regulate its air-to-fuel ratio, not to mention hoses for PCV valves, oil coolers, and more.

Signs to Replace Your Belts and Hoses

Is your ride having performance problems? It is completely disabled? Worn belts and hoses might be to blame. Signs that may be true include:

  • Visible damage or looseness
  • Screeching or chirping noises
  • Fluid leaks, either around a hose or under the vehicle
  • Battery and interior lighting trouble
  • Engine problems, such as misfires, overheats, and failed startups
  • Complete systems failure

How often you need to replace belts varies by mileage and the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. Most hoses, however, you should change at least every 4 years. Your timing chain, on the other hand, ought to last the lifetime of your engine.
