OEM Mopar Cylinder Heads
The cylinder head is a housing, usually made out of cast iron or aluminum, and located on the top of the engine block under your vehicle's hood. It contains engine parts like the intake and exhaust valves, springs and lifters, and the combustion chamber itself.
Its job is threefold. For one, it takes in air and fuel via ports or tracts and expels exhaust gases. Secondly, it helps keep engine parts cooler by channeling coolant into the block. Third, using a head gasket helps prevent water or oil from leaking into the combustion chambers.
There are three main types of cylinder heads. The first is flathead. Their primary role is to protect cylinder blocks, and they have no moving parts. The second is overhead valve. They have camshafts above them, and their pushrods and valves are connected to smooth out airflow. The third is overhead camshaft. These have camshafts located inside them, eliminating the need for pushrods. They provide optimal airflow and increase engine efficiency.
Signs of a Bad Cylinder Head
The signs of bad cylinder head are many. They include:
- Cracks, which often happen because of engine overheats; these can cause the above-mentioned oil leaks
- Coolant leaks, which can lead to further overheating
- Engine performance problems
- Engine misfires
If you suspect you've got one, do a careful inspection. You may need to replace your cylinder head, if not your entire engine, depending on the results.
