Your headlights have functions you're likely already familiar with, such as low-beam and high-beam settings. The former is for everyday driving. The latter is for extreme dark.

Of course, a headlight can also work as a hazard light. Put two together, and you get flashers. They indicate you're in trouble and need help, and they can also let other drivers know there's a dangerous situation nearby.

Some headlighting even has low-glare fog lights. They're either integrated or installed in separate housings, and they're ideal illumination in bad weather.

Whatever headlights your vehicle has, though, they're one of three types, most likely. Halogen headlights, for instance, are the commonest, especially in smaller cars. Xenon headlights, on the other hand, you'll often find in sports cars because they fit in narrower headlamp housings. They're also called high-intensity discharge lights -- HID, for short. LED headlights, though, you'll find in many newer vehicles. They're energy-efficient, and they don't produce excess heat.

What kind of headlamps your vehicle needs, though, depends on two things: what it came with and which it's compatible with. Refer to your owner's manual for a more precise answer to the question.

When to change car light bulbs, however, depends only on what type they are. You should generally replace halogen lights every two years or so, Xenon lights as they weaken, about every three years, and LED lights if their electronics die or the lights themselves fail.
