The starter motor in your vehicle has an electromagnet attached. This is its starter solenoid. It connects the motor to your battery. Sometimes, you'll see starter solenoids referred to as starter relays, though these relays are often separate, powering your solenoid when your ignition switch engages it. What a starter solenoid does is help your starter motor, and therefore, the rest of your vehicle's ignition system (ignition coil included), crank your engine. It also engages your starter pinion and engine ring gear.

What are the Signs of a Failing or Bad Starter Solenoid?

Try turning your key. If you hear a click or repeated clicks, your engine starts seemingly on its own, or your starter doesn't disengage when you let go of the key, you almost certainly have starter solenoid problems. The same goes for if your engine starts erratically, or if it doesn't start at all.
