The process helps an engine stay at the proper temperature so it can keep working the best that it can. So, how does the water pump in your vehicle work? First, water from your radiator passes through your engine, heating up along the way. Your water pump is what shunts the liquid to back to your radiator, where it cools off once more. The process repeats. More specifically, in most models these days, the engine moves the water pump's belt, which then turns its axle. The axle movement creates suction, a vacuum effect which pulls the water out of the radiator. When the water reaches the pump, it's driven against the pump's outer walls by centrifugal force. Then, it goes down a drain into the engine block, where it passes through the cylinder heads and gets piped back into the radiator. Unfortunately, a water pump can fail as it ages. Luckily, there are a few signs.
